  • What is a catalyst? Give examples of how a catalyst can bring about profound change in the world.
  • Discuss ways that kings began to increase their power. How did this contribute to the rise of the nation state?
  • Globalization basically means an interconnected world. Discuss several factors that helped to create a global community.
  • By 1700, many European powers began to explore the world and claim new territories. What were their motivations for establishing overseas colonies?
  • What was the Renaissance? Discuss ways this new enlightenment led to change in society.
  • What is humanism? Discuss how this new philosophy was different from how things have always been, and how it changed how people viewed their place in the world.
  • How did new scientific understandings in the world change things? Specifically, how did it represent a direct challenge to the Church’s authority?
